Obesity can affect your dog’s health in many ways:
- Being too heavy adds stress to your dog’s joints, bones, and muscles.
- Excess weight can cause breathing problems.
- Extra pounds can take a toll on your dog’s heart making it have to work harder.
- It can cause joint pain and make it harder for them to move around freely.
- Rolls of fat can cause skin problems and infections.
- Your dog may become lazy, and not have the same energy that he or she used to have.
- Predisposes you pet for Diabetes.
Many pet owners do not realize, but almost half the dogs we see at our hospital are overweight. Some of them are even obese! An obese dog is 20% above its ideal weight. What we call a BCS (body condition score) may be used to classify your dog’s weight. At Atwood we use the body scoring system numbered 1-9, 5 is ideal. I’m sure if your canine companion is overweight that you know proper diet and exercise is an important first step. For some cases though it may not be enough.
SLENTROL:
This drug is the first. safe and effective weight loss medication made specifically for dogs. It is in liquid form (easy to administer) given once a day to your dog. It is dosed specifically for each dog, and doses vary during treatment. This drug has been tested in the United States and Europe for many years. It has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration, and is only available by prescription from your veterinarian.
The researchers of Slentrol surveyed many people and found that 61% of the owners noticed that their dogs run more, 47% noticed an increase in play, and 37% saw that their dogs can climb stairs easier.
Some Statistics from 141 dogs that completed a 4-month study
- Average weight loss was 3% each month
- Almost all of the dogs lost weight
- More than half the dogs lost about 12% of their body weight over the course of the study.
With Slentrol about 90% of the weight loss comes from eating less due to a smaller appetite. The other 10 % comes from less fat being absorbed.
Slentrol is not right for all dogs; so let your veterinarian decide if your pet would benefit from this drug. He or She will do a complete physical, and look at previous attempts at weight loss, and discuss how you are currently managing your dog’s nutritional needs and weight. In many cases diet and exercise under the supervision of your veterinarian is enough. In those cases where diet and exercise has been attempted, and was unsuccessful, this may be the answer.
As with all drugs there are side effects. Please go to the website below for more information.
